Cognex ↔ Keyence — A Two-Way Equivalence Guide for Machine Vision & ID

Match any product class to its counterpart in the other brand — whichever direction you are coming from.

Cognex vs Keyence machine vision comparison

Who this is for: This is a two-way reference. Whether you currently work with Keyence and need the equivalent Cognex camera or reader, or you work with Cognex and want to find the matching Keyence product, this guide lines the two brands up category by category so you can read across in either direction — even with no prior experience of the other brand. Every model class shown here ships with integrated lighting, so there is no separate light to select or wire.

Both Keyence and Cognex cover the same ladder of industrial vision and code-reading products — from a simple AI vision sensor up to a high-performance smart camera, plus fixed-mount and handheld barcode readers. The names differ, but the categories line up cleanly. Find your product in either brand column and read across to its counterpart.

Cognex In-Sight SnAPP vision sensor

The simplest tier: a compact AI vision sensor for everyday checks — presence/absence, basic classification and counting — set up quickly without deep vision expertise. The Keyence IV4 and the Cognex In-Sight SnAPP are the like-for-like pair. Both come in monochrome and colour, and both have an integrated ring light built in.

A step up into deep-learning inspection: variable defects, awkward surfaces and challenging text that rule-based tools struggle with. The Keyence VS smart camera (VS-L / VS-S heads) and the Cognex In-Sight 2800 are counterparts, both running a deep-learning toolset. Both offer monochrome and colour, with integrated lighting (Cognex uses its RGBW Multi Torch).

Keyence VSCognex In-Sight 3800

Keyence VS smart camera

Cognex In-Sight 3800 smart camera
Cognex In-Sight 3800© Cognex Corporation

The full-capability, all-in-one smart camera for demanding inspection, gauging and metrology, with a complete tool library and higher resolution options. On the Keyence side this is the standalone VS smart camera; on the Cognex side it is the In-Sight 3800. Note that both the 2800 and 3800 correspond to the same Keyence VS smart-camera class — Cognex simply splits that range into a deep-learning-focused model (2800) and a higher-performance, full-toolset model (3800).

Cognex DataMan 290 fixed-mount reader
Cognex DataMan 290© Cognex Corporation

An inline, fixed-mount 1D/2D barcode reader for production and logistics lines. The Keyence SR-X / SR-2000 and the Cognex DataMan 290 are equivalents. Both are offered with different integrated-light and lens options to suit working distance, field of view and reflective surfaces.

Keyence HR-XCognex DataMan 8700

Keyence HR-X handheld code reader

Cognex DataMan 8700 handheld reader
Cognex DataMan 8700© Cognex Corporation

A rugged handheld scanner for direct-part-mark (DPM) and label reading on the factory floor. The Keyence HR-X (and the SR-G100 for wireless DPM) corresponds to the Cognex DataMan 8700, which offers different reading engines for everything from challenging DPM codes to very small, high-density marks — each with its own integrated illumination.

One tier higher: the controller / PC-based tier

Above the all-in-one smart-camera range sits the controller-based tier, where a separate controller (or PC) drives one or more camera heads for the most demanding, high-resolution or multi-camera applications. On the Keyence side this covers two platforms — the current VS-G series (the VS-G2900 controller with separate heads) and the established XG-X series it succeeds. Both line up against Cognex's controller / PC-based VisionPro, not the all-in-one In-Sight range.

The practical point in either direction: a controller-based system and an all-in-one smart camera are not interchangeable. Keep the smart-camera comparison to the Keyence VS and the Cognex In-Sight (2800 / 3800); only move to the controller tier (VS-G or XG-X on the Keyence side, VisionPro on the Cognex side) when the application genuinely calls for it.

The Bottom Line

The two brands map onto each other category for category, so the comparison reads the same way whichever brand you start from. Identify the class — entry sensor, smart camera, fixed-mount reader, handheld reader, or controller system — and read across to the counterpart in the other brand. Match the category first, and the detailed model selection (resolution, lens, mono vs colour) follows naturally from there.
